Genevieve Keller Recalls her Days as a Student

(This article appeared in the Sheco and was written by Jannessa Disosway.)

 Mrs. Genievieve Keller graduated in 1923 at the age of eighteen. There were nineteen people in her graduating class, six boys and thirteen girls. She began school at age six. They started school at 9:00 am and let out at 4:00 pm. When they were old enough to start sports, the only sport that Sheldon offered was boys’ basketball. The girls were not offered any. During the time that she went to school, none of the teachers lived in Sheldon. If they wanted to stay in town for a couple of days, they were to room with a family that lived there. There was a barn next to the school for the teachers and students to put their horses and buggies in while they were at school.e are working on this area… Click here to read the full story.

 Miss Zetta Gay Whitson:

Miss Zetta Gay Whitson, world famous violinist, graduated from Sheldon High School, class of 1902.  She made her debut with the Bluthner Orchestra in Berlin Orchestra in Berlin Germany.  During her career, she played at most of the Royal Courts in Europe. She passed away in California.  (from 1959 Centennial Book)

Dr. Elven J. Berkheiser:

Dr. Elven J. Berkheiser, 1887-1958 graduated from Sheldon High School, class 1904.  Dr. Berkheiser was chief of the Orthopaedic  Service at Presbyterian Hospital, Chicago from 1933 to 1957.  He taught orthopaedic surgery at Rush Medical College and Illinois University.  He was affiliated with the Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium of Chicago, the United States Public Health Marine Hospital, and Cook County and Children’s Memorial Hospital.  At the time that the centennial book was written his sister Vernie Berheiser lived in Sheldon.  (from the 1959 Centennial Book)
