Sheldon Journal August 28, 1924 – new Sheldon Community High School

Arrangements are perfected for the dedication of the new Sheldon Community High School building Friday evening at 7:30 o’clock.

A fine program has been arranged, the whole building will be lighted up every room open for inspection.

The  address of the evening will be given by Prof. Heironomous, Community Advisor of the University of Illinois.

The people of Sheldon and the community embraced in the Sheldon Community High School District are proud of their schools, they would not trade these fine big educational  factories for all the commercial and manufacturing industries in the county, because they are the type of people who believe that educational industries are the most important enterprises in the world and so they are putting money and time and energy in providing adequate schools for young folks to enter to build up their minds in preparation for the duties that will fall upon their shoulders in years to come. (Has that for a long sentence???)

For the first time in the history of Sheldon Schools the elementary grades and high school will occupy separate buildings.

Manual Training and Domestic Science have been added to the curriculum.

The school work this year will necessitate eight periods instead of seven as formerly.

The building which is specially designed to meet the needs of a modern high school in a community such as this, is two stories and basement in height with ground excavation for basement of only two feet.

It is built of brick, the exterior walls faced with a vitrified shale face brick, the trim being of best quality Buff Bedford, Indiana Lime Stone.

Economy has been the watchword of the board at all times during the erection of the building, every effort has been made to make the taxpayers dollar go just as far as possible, quality being always a prime consideration.

Teacher’s Pets

Sheldon’s first frame school house stood at the corner of North Fourth and East Concord Street.  In those days ‘janitor ‘ was just a word in the dictionary and it was considered an honor by the older boys, on cold winter days, to be allowed to carry in wood and stack it in the annex, so the teacher would not have to leave classes, to go outside for fuel to keep the heating stove going.

Avid Sheldon Ram Fan

Harry Brubaker (Class of 1913) was an avid SHELDON RAM FAN
He had an Honorable Season Pass for all the games.
In 1977 a SPECIAL chair was painted by the Sheldon Art Department and place on the
basketball half-court line in the Sheldon gym for Harry to enjoy at all the basketball games.
Our museum also has Harry’s 1913 “Wool” basketball uniform on display and a picture of his 1913 basketball team.

April 1924 Sheldon Journal

The election of members of the Board of the Sheldon Community High School last Saturday brought out the heaviest vote that has ever been recorded at a school election in Sheldon.  No explanation of the unusual interest could be given except that rumors were current on the streets that certain names were to be written in.

From the Centennial History Book

In 1848 Oliver P. Bookless arrived and became Sheldon township’s first school teacher.  In 1850 he married Miss Emily Lister and settled at what is now the southeast corner of Shewami Country Club.

May 15, 1924 Sheldon Journal – Sheldon wins First Place in Oratory at County Meet

Sheldon High School landed first place in Oratory at the 21st annual meet of the Iroquois County Athletic and Oratorical Association held Friday and Saturday.

Our dandy little orator, Andrew Mayotte, swept everything before him with his oration “Abraham Lincoln” and was awarded first place for his efforts.
